Equipment

  • Skillet

Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb ground beef 80/20 blend for juiciness
  • 1 large egg acts as a binder
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs keeps the steaks from falling apart
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder

Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp soy sauce adds depth
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ½ onion sliced

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • Mix until just combined, don’t overwork the meat. Shape the mixture into four equal-sized patties and slightly flatten them.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a little butter or oil.
  • Place the patties in the skillet and sear for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove the patties from the pan and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt the butter and add sliced onions. Sauté until soft and caramelized.
  • Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  • Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Add soy sauce and thyme, then simmer for 5 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, coating them with the gravy. Reduce the heat and let everything simmer for 5 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.

Notes

For extra gravy, double the beef broth and seasonings. For a keto-friendly version, replace breadcrumbs with almond flour.
