Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Rolling Pin
  • Deep Fryer or Heavy Pot
  • Cooling Rack

Ingredients

Dough

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm milk 110°F
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter softened

Glaze

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add eggs, butter, salt, and half the flour. Mix until well combined.
  • Gradually add the remaining flour and knead for 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  • Roll out the dough to about ½ inch thickness and cut out circles using a donut cutter (or a cup and small bottle cap for the center).
  • Place cut donuts on parchment paper, cover loosely, and let rise for another 30–45 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry each donut for 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Dip warm donuts in the glaze and let excess drip off. Place on a wire rack and let the glaze set for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, add cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough, or swap vanilla extract for maple or almond extract in the glaze.
