Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk or whole milk

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch cake pans.

  • In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk, until smooth.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the pans and bake for 25-30 minutes. Let the cakes cool completely.
  • Mix buttercream frosting with orange food coloring until it reaches the desired shade.
  • Frost the cakes with the orange buttercream, creating a smooth finish.
  • Use black gel icing to draw basketball lines on the cake.
  • For extra detail, use a textured mat to imprint a basketball pattern onto fondant before applying.
  • Chill for 30 minutes before serving for best results.

Notes

For a 3D basketball cake, use hemisphere cake pans and stack two layers together. Add fondant details for a realistic finish.
